Onder onze voeten groeit een onzichtbaar leven. Een verborgen netwerk van draden en schimmels weeft zich door de aarde, waar bomen elkaar vinden en fluisterend berichten uitwisselen. Over hun welzijn, dreigend gevaar, of hoe ze elkaar kunnen helpen. Deze ongrijpbare energie vangen de makers in het lichtwerk Underground Whispers. In dit werk verbeelden ze de magische wereld onder de grond — de stille, maar onafgebroken communicatie tussen bomen die ons verbindt met het ritme van de natuur.
Over de makers
Eerder maakte Hofland & Schmidt het lichtkunstwerk ‘Winged Migration’ voor het Amsterdam Light Festival in 2015. Ze werkten vaker samen voor festivals, zoals Over het IJ en Oerol.
Judith Hofland ontwerpt concepten voor interactie met het publiek. Dit doet ze in allemogelijke vormen: van beeldend, theater, games en video. Ze maakt gebruik van de omgeving en laat zich inspireren door natuurlijk gedrag.
Tessel Schmidt is een videokunstenaar die alledaagse scènes transformeert tot intrigerende werelden. Met macro-landschappen van alledaagse materialen opent ze deuren naar grotere, onverwachte universums. Hiermee daagt ze de kijker uit hun waarneming te heroverwegen.

Beneath our feet, an invisible world is growing. A hidden network of threads and fungi weaves through the earth, where trees find each other and whisper messages—about their well-being, impending danger, or how they can offer support. Underground Whispers captures this elusive energy in light, visualizing the magical world beneath the ground—the silent yet continuous communication between trees that connects us to the rhythms of nature.
About the Artists
Hofland & Schmidt previously created the light installation Winged Migration for the Amsterdam Light Festival in 2015. They have collaborated on various festivals, including Over het IJ and Oerol.
Judith Hofland designs interactive concepts that engage the audience in diverse forms, from visual art and theater to games and video. She draws inspiration from natural behaviors and the surrounding environment.
Tessel Schmidt is a video artist who transforms everyday scenes into intriguing worlds. By creating macro landscapes from ordinary materials, she opens portals to larger, unexpected universes, challenging viewers to rethink their perception of reality.
